We just moved into a new house (on Tuesday!), and next week would have been the due date for the baby, so we’re having a very quiet Christmas here. I set my expectations low, and I bought a lot of cheese based on the advice of S. (she put together a 12 Days of Cheesemas! Cheesemas, guys! Is that not the best thing you’ve ever heard?). My mum also sent a wheel of Vermont cheddar.
Things are good. I braved Whole Foods, which was absolutely not as insane as I expected (my eternal standard for crazy grocery shopping: Russo’s in Watertown, MA on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and I am lucky I left with all my limbs and eyes*). Our neighbors brought over a plate of cookies and some gossip about the former owners of the house, which was awesome and suburban in the best way possible. We got the wood stove cranking, and Cashew has taken to laying himself down in front of it in full pig-on-a-spit mode. I myself have taken to eating a cookie every time I go into the kitchen. Obviously I will be having some cherry bourbon shortly in celebration of the birth of the baby Jesus.
If you are celebrating Christmas, I hope it is everything that you want, and if you are not, I hope you have a lovely Saturday and Sunday.
* If you live in the Boston area and have not gone to Russo’s YOU MUST. PROMISE ME YOU WILL GO. I love it with all my heart. They have the most amazing produce in terms of selection and quality, and fantastic cookies, and it is all so cheap. I want to warn you, though, that is it more like a New York city grocery store than anything else, in that the aisles are absolutely not wide enough for carts, and it’s crowded, and people shop aggressively. I brought Dave, who is a midwesterner, once and he ended up pressed into a corner near the ricottas, unable to call for help.
