YOU ARE ALL NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS
I know it has been said before, but I wish I could sit down with everyone involved in The Bachelor and have a short grammar conversation.
I will even let subject and verb agreement go if we could nail down the appropriate uses of the personal pronouns me and I. I’m not going to get into explaining the difference between subjective and objective pronouns, but instead just offer a trick: if you are considering saying “Ben and I” or “Jennifer and me” or whatever else, try it first without the other person’s name.
For instance (and I made this sentence up because I blocked out the exact one): “It was nice to spend some time together, just Ben and I” may not sound wrong to you and I’m going to try not to judge you for that. But I think we can all agree that “It was nice to spend some time alone, just I” is clearly incorrect.
I’m going to consider use of the word myself varsity English-language speaking, and not appropriate until we’ve mastered me and I.
Real sentences from the episode: “I feel like this is something special between Ben and I.” “I can’t wait til there’s less girls.” “I witnessed Ben and her’s whole conversation.”
